Caney Falls - Bankead's cascading sisters

Lower Caney with rock sculpture, Spring 2008
In my two years living in Alabama my fascination with moving water has been fueled by two great waterfalls on Caney Creek. They are located off of Winston County 2. About 3 miles after turning right from AL-33 a forest service road leads to the Upper portion of the majestic duo. With all the rain we have had the Upper falls had a 25 foot spread in the big fall and a 9 or 10 in the smaller. By following the river downstream about a mile the Lower falls drop into a large pool. The best thing about these falls is that the hike is a good 2 or 3 miles round trip and provides excellent exercise. I have made a couple of my favorite waterfall photos at these two beauties but it is time to explore new wilderness areas.
