This week we had a special visit from a good friend who now lives in South Dakota. He was the best man in my wedding and has always been there to one up me on obscure sports knowledge and fuel my new found love of Kentucky's Native Spirit, Bourbon.

At one point the rambunctious nature of children got the best of Addyson and she slapped Carlee so loud I heard it downstairs. The fight apparently broke out after a dispute over who's turn it was to listen to the headphones at full volume.

Carlee won, Addyson received a time out and I was reminded of the joys of parenting by my sister who entered her room to discipline with a black handled spatula.

The 8th annual Picture Kentucky workshop travelled to Breathitt County for a Photojournalism revival last week. Sixteen students scattered about the county looking for good photos and honing their storytelling skills.

PKY Co-founder Dave Labelle edits photos with his team before the final critique.

Coached by Kent State Professor and Workshop Co-Creator Dave Labelle, Indianapolis Star veteran photojournalist Matt Detrich, Lexington Native and Washington Post photographer Jahi Chikwendiu and Retired photo editor of the Chattanooga Free Press Billy Weeks. The experience brought many new faces to the world of documentary photography including many Kentucky Kernel writers and non-traditional photo students.

Ale-8 and a White Flash kept the students and staff fed for the week in Jackson.

Overall the workshop went great. In his third year workshop producer Kernel Photo Adviser David Stephenson has streamlined the operation and works diligently to find stories that have solid leads so when the students arrive they usually need to make contact and are on the ground running.

Dance of the Dead: Thriller Re-enactment 10th year Anniversary

Sunday night 100's of re-enactors filled Lexington streets to perform, for the the tenth year, Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Mecca dance studio sponsored the event and held practices throughout the month of September in preparation for the choreographed march down main street. This year featured 3 Michael Jacksons and three groups of dancers positioned to give everyone a view of the most popular line dance of the undead.

A real American hero: Dakota Meyer

Sunday I was asked to cover a parade and ceremony for USMC Sgt. Dakota Meyer, a 2011 recipient of the Medal of Honor. Of the 85 living recipients only 3 are from Kentucky. 1971 recipient and Kentucky resident Don Jenkins was in attendance at Sunday's service. Meyer was very thankful in his speech but maintained that any serviceperson in his situation would have done the same for him. Columbia showed up to support him in a big way. There were more than 350 motorcycles in the parade and Blue Raider Stadium on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College was filled to capacity.

The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government.It is bestowed by the President in the name of Congress on members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish themselves through "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States.

From Meyer's Wiki entry:

On September 8, 2009, near the village of Ganjgal, Meyer learned that three U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman were missing after being ambushed by a group of insurgents. He charged into an area known to be inhabited by insurgents and under enemy fire. Meyer eventually found all four dead and stripped of their weapons, body armor, and radios.[5]

With the help of some friendly Afghan soldiers, he moved the bodies to a safer area where they could be extracted.[6] During his search, Meyer "personally evacuated 12 friendly wounded, and provided cover for another 24 Marines and soldiers to escape likely death at the hands of a numerically superior and determined foe."

Photo Mechanic: Code Replacement

GEICO Insurance company coined a phrase, "so easy a caveman can do it", well Photo Mechanic should have thought of it when talking about code replacements. It sounds tricky but is so way easy even I can show you how it works.

Code replacement is a great tool for sports photographers to use in order to effectively speed time writing captions while maintaining quality control with spelling and identifying players correctly.

Open the Text Editor of your choice. I use Text Edit on a Mac with OSX Lion, and for this example that is what will be shown.
Change the format of the editor to PLAIN TEXT.
Type your code.
**VERY IMPORTANT** Hit the tab key not the Spacebar.
Type your replacement. Hit return.
Repeat steps, 3-5 until all codes needed have replacements.

Save your file. Make sure you save as UTF-8 document. In Lion you will need to go into Text Edit preferences and "Open and Save" tab make sure UTF-8 is selected for "Saving files".

Open Photo Mechanic
Choose from the "Edit" menu >>>Settings>Set Code Replacements

A dialog bog will appear, then choose "Add", and navigate to the file that contains the code replacement data.

Delimeter Character: This character will be the key to initiating the code replacement. By surrounding your code with the delimeter character, for instance; say my code is "uk12", if i wanted to activate the code in my Photo Mechanic field I would type, /uk12/ and automatically the replacement would appear.

If for some reason you need to change your codes and or replacements, simply navigate to the .txt file where your code replacement is saved and make your changes but be sure to re-visit step 10 and select "Reload All" to update the changes made to the document.
Voila, you're done.

'Nach' Off

There are photographers in my life that give me inspiration both living and dead, local and national, male and female. One of those photographers is James Nacthwey. It may be the access he gains by developing trust with subjects or the methodical way he works a situation, but to me he embodies everything that a documentary photographer should be.

From time to time while on assignments I will see a situation that reminds me of photos I've seen before, usually made by my inspirers. When I see that situation I feel it is my duty to the legacy of their great photo to emulate that photo. This notion was reinforced by another of person I draw inspriation from, Sam Abell, in an interview I did with him back in 2006.

After a cross country race on Saturday while following the winner to receive her congratulations from family and friends a situation I felt I'd seen before unfolded before me.

After the competitor sat down and removed her shoes to relieve the stress caused by the 5000 meters she had just ran in 90+ degree heat, I immediately was reminded of a photo I had seen before.

It was the photo of a boy in South Africa who was on a rite of passage journey that Natchwey made back in 1992. Now I realize there were many elements that exist in his photo that do not in mine, but I feel it is healthy to be aware of where you inspiration as a photographer comes from and implement that in your daily work.

Danielle and I went to visit Jackie, Addyson, and Carlee the other day. They are developing such personalities and Addyson may be the most perceptive 4 year old I have ever known, all doting aside. And Carlee's little voice will make you melt.

I just received my 50mm 1.4 back from the shop after it was found unresponsive so I decided to shoot very wide open. I have been told f1.4 is not a style but it sure helps clean the background up. Check out my post from when I first bought the 50mm 1.4.

Clyde: He rules the roost with an iron fist. If by "iron fist" you mean a puff of cotton candy.

Bonnie: She prances around waiting for the next dangly thing to pounce on.

Danielle's parents were fostering a couple of kittens.

For a few hours. After that there was a short meeting about what to name them then, voila! The upper quadrant of the Crestwood home belongs to two little fur balls. They are sweet, curious and full of energy. Just what doctor ordered for a couple who are getting antsy waiting for their first grandchild, uh hem!

Let's face it though Danielle already has her hands full raising one adult child I can imagine her boiling point if we were to add a little baby child to the mix.

While we visit I will ignore my allergic tendancies to their scratching and biting because who doesn't love ~~kids~~ I mean Kittens!

They are not posing too well for Hipstamatic photos so I have to be quick.

En Provence | Trip to Southern France 2011

This past weekend we took a side trip to Provence, in southern France, to tour the countryside see vineyards, lavender fields, and to see some of the sites that inspired some of Vincent Van Gogh's most famous paintings.
As with the last post this one will go on so I have broken the content up so viewers can skip to their favorite part.

We stayed in a charming hotel to the east of Arles, Fr., called Auberge du Mas de la Feniere-Arles. The accommodations were quite to our liking as we left Geneva on a rainy night and had to navigate the backroads of Provence via GPS.

A young boy runs around the courtyard fountain at Espace De Van Gogh in Arles, France. The hospital site is where the ailing artist convalesced after cutting off part of his ear.

Once we found the hotel we had to go on a scavenger hunt to locate the key to our room. The innkeeper had hidden it under a ash tray at the front door.

While driving there I did make a snarky comment about the decorum of the town adjacent to the hotel. It was something about the town "being a dump", I was in a state it was late and somewhat over tired from driving in the dark and raining. Once we found the hotel and were settled I managed to calm down.

The next morning we went to Centre Ville (The Center of the City) to plan our day. We went to the spot where Van Gogh painted his famous "Cafe at Night" and ate lunch across the street. Danielle had the equivalent of a Ham and Cheese sandwich, I went with the Hamburger Au Cheval, which I'll get to in a bit. The plate featured a patty with an egg sunny side up and no bun.

After lunch we visited the Roman Coliseum in the city and an Art Museum then toured Espace de Van Gogh, which was a hospital where he convalesced for a time. As the day wore on we decided to hit up a town to the east of us called St. Remy, another spot where Van Gogh spent time for treatment.

Upon our arrival we stumbled into a Olive Oil shop where we tasted, that's right, tasted multiple oils. "Fruity Green and Fruity Black", in her best English accent said the girl at the counter while explaining the differences between the two kinds of oil we were tasting. Apparently the "fruity green" is made from less mature olives and the "black" made from more mature.

We walked away with a bottle mostly due to the fact she was such a good salesperson. She also gave us some sound advice about places up the road to check out.
We found the hospital at St. Remy and saw some of the exact spots where Van Gogh painted some of his most recognizable works. There were gentlemen up the hill a ways painting the olive trees and area surrounding that featured mountains and an old home place.

On the ride back from St. Remy I noticed a sign for Cavaillion. I asked Danielle if Cavaillion was the french word for horse. She said Cheval was the french word for horse. Then I got to thinking back to lunch and what I had ordered. Hamburger Au Cheval, so I gasp and told Danielle that we must have eaten horse for lunch.

Danielle made me swear I would never tell anyone about the fact we had eaten horse meat. Later I would look on the internet and find that Hamburger Au Cheval is just a term they give for a hamburger (beef) patty with an egg on top.
Back at the hotel we enjoyed a three course meal that featured salad a roast, beef of course, with potatoes and carrots and an amazing fruit dessert with mint and 8 types of fruit.

Working paddle wheels were used in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue to provide power for Silk and Paper manufactures in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Today was a fantastic day. We started out around 9 a.m. to visit a town east of Arles called L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. It is situated along the Sorgue River and features paddle wheels and little river-side cafes. It was one of the more quaint non-commercialized towns in Provence.

After lunch we went on a spree of visiting small towns it seemed like a whirlwind but we were trying to kill time until the big photo shoot. We visited Bonnieux, Lacoste, Menerbes before heading back to Gordes, where I had seen the potential for some nice photos. We also wanted to check out Abbaye Notre Dame de Senanque, because I had seen some post-cards with lavender fields in front of it.

Danielle takes a short respite in Bonnieux before we head out for Gordes.

We drove around for a few minutes when we made it back to Gordes looking for a place to put on Danielle's wedding dress. She is such a trooper we ended up in at an Architecture firm's parking lot and just pulled her wedding dress on over the one she was wearing then she wriggled out of the existing attire and presto I was driving a real princess around Southern France, highlight of my day!

Some people looked and gave thumbs up, others with children pointed her out and I'm sure told them that she was a princess or an angel.

Once we made it to the spot where I thought we could get some work done, aka take a nice photo, there was some toolshed going through his photos on his phone in the exact spot where I needed Danielle to stand. He looked as if he hadn't brought an extra card and was editing photos in camera and making room to take a photo of the city down below.

After 5 minutes of that and two of canoodling the woman he was with they finally parted like the Red Sea.

Did I mention the wind was blowing 100 mph. It actually worked out better that the wind was blowing otherwise we would have needed creative ways to make her veil move around.
I made sure Danielle had plenty of bobby pins in her veil clip because I could just see that thing flying over the edge 100 ft below.

Finally after 4 years, 4000 plus miles and 8 days we were ready to do something we told each other we were going to do at our 5 year anniversary. I pressed the shutter down and looked on the back of the camera, stunning. Nothing I did, just was amazed at how beautiful my subject was.

Another 100 or so shutter accuations and I thought I would let her have a look.
She liked the ones where she wasn't smiling. The hard light made the photos have more of an edge and I agreed we did a few more with no smile then moved on. (Note: When these photos were shown back in Louisville, Danielle's mother pointed out all the wrinkles in the dress that has been in a box for 4 years. Thank you Cheryl!)

Earlier in the day we had been to the Abbey and saw there were brilliant lavender fields in front of the property and wanted to go back to check them out. As we descended the hill into the valley from Gordes to my dismay the sun had dropped too low and there was no light on the Abbey or lavender fields

We decided to come to Provence over Paris because, A., neither of us had been to Provence, and she wanted photos in a lavender field. Which I now understand because they are beautiful and smell amazing.

Luckily there was a perfect little field higher up the cliffs before the Abbey that we saw on the way down. We drove back a dirt road and came to this perfect field as if it were made just for us. No one to bother us, except the gale force wind whipping about.

We shot a variety of poses amongst the lavender, then left to find another cool spot as the sun was now going down very rapidly.

On the way back we stopped along the way to take a few photos. This view from the road shows Le Percy a small town outside Grenoble, France.

We left our wonderful hotel at Arles and started back to Geneva in the morning and took the long way back.

Danielle was over the traffic jam after about 10 minutes.

We drove through the mountains and little towns along the way. At one point I totally forgot we were driving 250 miles out of the way to get back to Geneva.

Tuesday: June 21, 2011 | BACK TO TOP

Having the threat of rain yet again I decided to bum around Geneva for the day. My day started by riding the #8 all the way to the French border and then stayed on for the trip back. It amazes me that you can just ride public transport so many places here. When the bus headed back into the city I jumped off at the part of the city they call Old Town.

St. Pierre's Cathedral. It was begun under Arducius de Faucigny, the prince-bishop of the Diocese of Geneva, in the 12th century, and includes an eclectic mix of styles. It is best known as the adopted home church of John Calvin, one of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation. Inside the church is a wooden chair used by Calvin.

When Danielle got off work we met her boss in his town of Versoix for wine and cheese on the lake. I joked with D at one point asking, "Why do these cities have no charm?" of course that was a complete joke since Versiox and all the other places we have visited are some of the most charming I've ever been to.

As the sun set beach goers were rewarded with a rainbow on the lake a common occurance I'm told.

Today was a big day for me. After waking early to catch the 6:30 train from Geneva to Zermatt my hopes were to see the Matterhorn before the day was over.

After switching trains in Visp (pronounced Wee-sp) I was there at about 10:30 a.m. Four hour train ride no biggie.

The town of Zermatt is very quaint the way you would picture a German town in an Alpine valley. From what I read on the internet about the town it is very touristy, but it didn't come off that way to me. After exploring for a bit I began to look for a place to take a photo of the most famous mountain in Switzerland.

As my accent began there were a constant stream of people walking up a hill so like a lemming I followed. After passing an old church it was finally visible. About 85% of it was visible when I first saw it but had been warned the clouds obstruct it much of the time.

Now what? I've seen the mountain, 'Do I walk back down the hill and get back on the 4 hour train ride back to Geneve?' It was barely 11:30. So after commandeering an internet signal from a random house along the way I was able to contact Danielle. Like the good world traveller she is within minutes she had sent me information about what to do while in Zermatt. Initially we thought the transportation pass I was given, that said you could ride any form of transit free for one day, didn't include everything.

"Matterhorn Glacier Paradise," she typed as I looked up and saw the sign with my own eyes.

Sunday: June 19, 2011 | BACK TO TOP

Today we travelled to Montreux to visit the Chateau Chillon and on the way back stop in the vineyards of Lavaux.

On the way to Chillon the 40 minute walk was extended by my curiosity. The breathtaking views of the crystal clear Lake Geneva and the Alps made the backdrop too good to pass up for photos. Flowers and the meandering path lead all the way from Montreux to the Castle bridge.

The Château de Chillon (Chillon Castle) is located on the shore of Lake Léman(Lake Geneva)in the canton of Veytaux, at the eastern end of the lake, 3 km from Montreux, Switzerland. The castle consists of 100 independent buildings that were gradually connected to become the building as it stands now.

The Castle itself dates back to the 12th century and can be evidenced by its architecture and because Lord Byron's signature is on a pillar in the dungeon where François de Bonivard, a Genevois monk and politician who was imprisoned there from 1530 to 1536. Byron wrote a poem about it "The Prisoner Of Chillon" (1816).

Danielle is spending 10 weeks in Geneva on a internship with the Lutheran World Federation.

Having the opportunity to visit a european city as rich in human rights and goodwill as Geneva is, the choice to come visit was simple. Besides ten weeks without my sweet wife doesn't sound appealing.

Today started a bit soggy. We tried to go and see a Regatta but we were drenched by the time we got to the Lake.

I was introduced to Ashley and Adam, friends of Danielle from Oldham County. Adam is working for a couple years at the Swiss office of Price Waterhouse Cooper. We had an amazing breakfast, since the weather was yucky, that consisted of Crepes, Nutella and Ice Cream. Unbelievably awesome!!!!!

Mine consisted of Crepe, Nutella and Fragola (Italian for Strawberry) Sorbet.

After the amazing breakfast we went to the Phillipe Patek Watch museum. It was very cool and free but I could not take my camera in. While that dampened my spirit I soldiered through and we had fun. Afterwards we went to the the Red Cross Museum and were somewhat depressed when leaving to see how people treated each other and still do. The fact that the Red Cross was created is very sobering.

Friday: June 17, 2011 | BACK TO TOP

After sleeping until 2pm and ridding myself of any jet lag. I awaited Danielle's return from work and we headed out to the Servette Migros. Migros is similar to Kroger in terms of its proliferation. It works pretty much the same way our stores do except you have to have your own bag or they will charge you for a paper bag and you can buy one that is more sturdy.

After dinner we met some of her friends she has met while here at the Fete de Musica in Parc des Bastions. Then we went out to have a drink at a place called Remy.

Thursday: June 16, 2011 | BACK TO TOP

Arrived safely in Geneva around 8am this morning. Went back to the place where Danielle is staying on Rue de Grand Pre. Very tired but she made me stay up all day to help with the jet lag. We visited the lake and walked to a botanical garden. The city is very clean and well organized. We ate lunch at a place called Cafe du Lys and was fitting since I had just arrived from Louisville. After our tour around the city we came home and Danielle had a jar of yogurt appropriately named Heidi.

Quarter Century of Losing

This past weekend I was sure history was going to be made. I was correct, UK was handed its 25th loss in a row to the University of Tennessee. There was a glimmer of hope near the end of the game but was quickly squandered away. In the overtime period UK's defense was no match for UT's super back Hardesty. Maybe next year, I have always wanted to shoot a game in Neyland Stadium.

Our Frist Date

Danielle was able to come with to Nashville this weekend for the UK vs. Vandy football game. She was my assistant meaning she would calm me down when I was heated after I missed a photo or the lack of action made me cranky.

Today we traveled to Franklin, Tn., for some shopping and local flavor. Monell's located on the main drag into Franklin offered a feast. We sat with a random family we had never seen before in our lives but they were very nice.

After eating a feast fit for a king we went back to Nashville to visit the Frist Art Museum. There was a Georgia O'Keefe exhibit and surrealist photographer exhibit going on. As we exited the museum there was some pretty awesome light bathing the city as the sun went down.

I missed a phone call from Lou yesterday, he was at Cave Run Lake. Nearly frantic and out of breath he was lamenting the fact that I was not with him to document what would be a momentous day.

While trolling Zilpo Flats with a friend he observed his rod buckling down and assumed he was stuck on an impediment. As he reeled he noticed a few thrashes and determined he was in for the fight of his Muskie fishing life. By the time he left the water that night no less than 20 boats came up to them and asked to view photos of the, 40lb, 51", near state record game-fish.

For Lou the hunter that has seen a Black Bear, Elk, Chinook Salmon, and many Deer at the end of his sight/hook has hit another milestone in his outdoor life. The fish of 10,000 casts has brought him a trophy for the wall.

The University of Florida brought their own swamp to Lexington but the clouds broke just in time for the game. Florida put the game away early but were given a scare when in the third quarter their star quarterback and Heisman trophy winner was sacked by a Kentucky defender and fell into a fellow teammate knocking him unconscious. Tebow was helped off the field but was later taken to the hospital after vomiting several times on the sideline.

Networking is an important aspect of the workshop. Rubbing elbows with folks in the industry that one may never run into for various reasons. One of the more important things to bring with you to a workshop other than an open mind is a set of business cards. You'll never know when a potential job is lurking around the corner because someone remembers your hard work and actually has a way to get in touch with you. Workshop producer David Stephenson uses a company called Moo.Com for his cards and I most recently had some printed by a company called Zazzle.comWhen I was a senior in college I used an independent study course to intern at the Herald-Leader. After graduation there have been quite a few calls telling me of freelance opportunities outside the editorial scope by the director of photography. Another Herald-Leader alumunus Brett lives in Whitesburg, Ky., now and does some work for the Herald-Leader. His geographic location helps because he lives in a place where there are not many journalists. If you are thinking about becoming a photojournalist you are most likely not going to get a job in New York or Los Angeles. Chances are you will have to go where the work is and rural areas or small towns is where its at. Plus these macro environments lend themselves to better photojournalism in some cases.

Dove me Tender

Today I went with my father-in-law to a Shelby County farm to witness a Dove hunt. It was an interesting mix of testosterone and lounging. A friend of his allows folks to use the land to hunt Dove and he was there with his hunting dogs.

Tuesday was the first day of the Dove season. Lou went out and shot a few but wanted to take advantage of the field his friend prepared. Around 5pm the birds flew in looking for a meal instead they were fed a gullet full of shot from a 12 gauge shotgun. Maybe one day I will take a hunter's safety course and get my Dove hunt on. What sounds more realistic is that I train a Lab to hunt with Dad-O and stay off PETA's radar.

Luckily in the history of my life there is no photographic evidence that I was thrown from a canoe today. Not that I couldn't have handled the teasing that would accompany such an event, but better none the less. I was given ample warning, 2 seconds, that we were quickly approaching a boulder in the middle of a rapid. The canoe planed up on the rock the vessel turned and like at the rodeo I was out. My initial reaction was somewhat like my wife's when pain or misfortune befalls someone, I chuckled. But soon thereafter Murphy's Law presided on Elkhorn Creek. Quiet you!, I thought but it was over in a split second. I had briefly but abruptly pinned my ankle betwixt the swift-moving current and a rock. Just enough time to bring me to my knees all the while keeping the boat upright. As one in our group observed, "Quasimodo" crawled to the shore dragging the boat with me since my paddling partner was oblivious to my injury. The response team really stepped it up coming to inspect if there was bloodshed or some type of fracture. Turned out OK in the end but now I have something to tell my grand kids.

Just sold the clunky but versatile 24-70mm f2.8 Canon lens to acquire a 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8
I like the normality the 50mm gives. It is begging for some creativity to happen while using it. Today while on the way to a fishing trip I explored finding aesthetically pleasing landscapes within the normal lens confines. Also if I ever find myself photographing a crime scene I can accurately depict the situation, because law enforcement officers are mandated to use a 50mm (that is what your eyes are) lens when documenting a crime scene. So I have that going for me, which is nice.

There was an ideal of what community journalism was to me that sometimes was lost in translation with the brass in the office. I soon realized that ,it's all good, in a sense because no matter what city I live in there are the same issues, same triumphs, and same failures.

For instance the other day I received a call to photograph an assignment in Bullitt County where a waste water treatment plant was leaking raw sewage into a nearby creek. My wheels were spinning trying to remember why it felt like deja vu when I arrived to the foul stenched meadow. Then it hit me that while in Decatur we did a story just like this one.
So this post and others like it will be an homage to the duality of newspapers and the solidarity of life. And like Greg "Humpty Hump" Jacobs from the Digital Underground proclaimed back in the 90's, "All around the world same song."

Danielle's Great Aunt and Uncle celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary Saturday in Milwaukee, Wisc. We drove up to Edgerton where her other "great" aunt lives. We spent the day out of the rain then the sun and humidity came out. The last time we were in Wisconsin, two months ago, it was like 45 degrees.

My friend David Coyle put on to this amazing App called Piratizer. First you make a photo of someone with your iPhone with the camera App or using the Piratizer software then accessorize your subject with various swashbuckling attire and gear.

The amazing aspect of this App is the fact that when beginning to Piratize a subject a face detection feature tries to locate features that make building the character easy.

Danielle and her friends volunteered at the event and performed a dance routine they had been practicing for a couple months. They found out about the event from a college friend who works for MAWF. Travis, the night's honoree was surrounded by good food good people and great music. A live auction and award presentation were followed by the girls' rendition of the Charleston, a dance made popular in the 1920's.

Reservoir Gate House

The Louisville Water Company Filtration Plant will celebrate its 100th anniversary Tuesday, July 21, 2009 with a public event held at the Old Gate House on Reservoir Avenue from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The LWC was a pioneer leading the nation to supply clean drinking water to her citizens.

Chief Engineer Charles Hermany was frustrated at the lack of a "pure supply". He built the reservoir to allow the sediment to settle but the finished product still contained small pieces of dirt. Old annual reports mention that customers had to let a cup of water sit so the sediment would settle to the bottom! (LWC.com)

Cyclists from all over the world traveled to the Red River Gorge to compete in the Tour of the Red River Gorge. Thursday marked stage four of the 5 stage race that will end with a criterium in Lexington on Friday, July 17, 2009. RUSSELL COUNTY - Two Cincinnati men laughed and joked on the Cumberland River last week as they reeled in fish after fish. Competitive barbs and jabs were traded between brothers-in-law Bill Bowman and Ed Morris of Cincinnati, who say they have seen the river at its best and worst. Bowman has made more than 1,000 trips to the river that draws anglers from near and far.

“It can humble you or it can make you very happy and you want to come back for more,” he said.

Right now anglers fishing the Cumberland are coming back for more.

For the fishing enthusiasts drawn to this 75-mile Kentucky fishery that stretches below Wolf Creek Dam to the Tennessee state line, the good news is that the trout - and other fish - are biting. The bad news is it may not be able to stay that way unless recent adverse conditions change.

Spring rains, coupled with ongoing repairs at Wolf Creek Dam, have led to a tumultuous fishing situation on the cool, narrow river known for great trout fishing. If the ambient air temperature and water temperature continue to rise, the trout population could be in danger, experts say.

“Trout become lethargic in the upper 60's, and above 69 (degrees) they don't feed very well,” said Dave Dreves, Kentucky Fisheries Research Biologist.

The water temperature began to rise two years ago, but dry summers prevented the adverse effects from showing up in the river. It was then that the Army Corps of Engineers began repairing the 5,736 foot-long dam for seepage issues and were forced to release more water through the dam, warming the river temperature.

In warmer waters, trout become stressed and more susceptible to disease, causing their mortality rate to rise. While the fish are managing right now, experts worry that the situation may worsen when air temperatures soar into the 90’s.

Under the KY-61 bridge in Burkesville midway down the Cumberland tailwater below Wolf Creek Dam toward the Tennessee State line, water temperatures were close to 68 degrees last week, said creel clerk Jeremy Radford. This temperature fluctuation will cause the trout to seek cooler water closer to the dam. There, the Army Corps of Engineers releases water from the 117-foot-deep frigid water of the lake and ensures that ample oxygen enters the fishery through sluice releases. The corps released more water this year from April - to mid-June than either of the spans from April to December in 2007 and 2008, according to the USACE.

Retired computer system network specialist Ron Bernard observed that pattern as he fished the Cumberland last week.

“Up closer to the dam it’s getting better and better and better, cause that water’s cold,” Bernard said, as he fished using a reel just below the dam hoping to land a stringer of trout. For fisherman using reels, at least one remarked it was the best fishing he had seen at the Cumberland in the 30 years since he’d been fishing it. However, for traditional fly fisherman wading and floating, this year may not bring as many bites. Many aren’t having much luck landing fish in the river’s warmer temperatures and deeper waters.

While the changes have brought concerns for the trout population, a silver lining also exists. Creel counters report anglers hauling perch, white bass, largemouth bass, sauger, walleye and crappie from the normally cool waters of the Cumberland.

“They’ve been a lot of bass caught this year, which you hardly ever see one in here, and bluegill,” Radford said. “I believe it’s because of the warm water.”

Fishing enthusiasts of all kinds, however, are hopeful that the trout population will make it through the adverse conditions to preserve Cumberland River as a premiere trout fishery.

“Hopefully with the right conditions from Mother Nature we can skate through this year,” Dreves said.

As Bowman surveyed his line, he reminisced on the many good fishing trips he’s enjoyed on this picturesque river. “This is the best kept secret in America,” he said. “It’s been a lifetime of fun here.”

Fishing Kentucky waterways is both a joy and at times can be frustrating. Especially for the fly fisherman. The Dix River is one of the best Trout Streams I have ever fished and the Cumberland River is a bonanza of structure and plenty of trout. Thing is during the rainy season of the year, which we are currently in. I t is hard to fish these bodies because the water is too high. We fly fisherman must find other ways to satisfy the fly casting jones. Bream fishing in farm ponds is a great way to both practice casting and timing the setting of the hook on smaller fish. Practicing barrel casts and fishing in tighter spaces rather than wading in a river are good skills to have as a fly fisherman.

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear assessed damage throughout Kentucky on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 after both a tornado and flood ravaged parts of central and eastern portions of the state. Myself and a reporter from the Lexington Herald-Leader (Ryan Alessi) recieved a birds eye view with various senators and representatives including speaker of the house Greg Stumbo. It was very interesting to fly around and see how the residents of small towns reacted to seeing the Governor. The prospect of a full moon rise near sunset brought me out to the Clarksville, Ind., side of Louisville's skyline on Saturday. There was no siting of the moon just after the sun went down but, there were plenty of opportunities to make cool feature photos.

Danielle ran the mini-marathon in Louisville this weekend. It was her first time competing in a race of this size since her 2:01:32 performance in the Nashville mini. Her 1:56:45 was a personal best. I am very proud of her.

A few weeks ago my friend David and I spent a few hours with Tom McCarthy. McCarthy's horse General Quarters won the Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland Racecourse Saturday, April 11, 2009. Now he will run for the roses on May 2, 2009 in the Kentucky derby. Both horse and trainer/owner were remarkable to be around and watch how they work. The magnificent steel gray and lightning fast colt will show his mettle this week and I will be pulling for him.

Muskellunge or "Muskie" are known to anglers as "the fish of 10,000 casts". These illusive giants often ignore one angler's presentation and strike when another visits their territory.

I have been a few times with my father-in-law to Cave Run Lake, east of Lexington, and have had no luck. However, April 9, 2009; will go down in history as the day I landed my first Muskie.

Actually the first one was puny and not worth toning the photo, but the second one was worth it. I was using a 1/2 ounce Rat-L-Trap fishing the banks and bouncing the lure off rocks close to submerged trees.

The landing of the fish was by far the most exciting part of the experience but without the help of my guide/father-in-law I wouldn't have been in the correct spots and, with those razor sharp teeth probably never gotten the fish in the boat.

While on assignment Sunday I went through my normal routine of attempting to make interesting photos and at the same time capturing the essence of the event. Usually when I arrive at an event a brief survey of the venue is the first thing I do. This exercise was no different at the Kentuckiana Antique Auto Swap meet in the Kentucky Fair and Exposition center.
After making photos of people being lured into booths by the potential for a part that would fit their needs I turned my camera to the details of the event. One booth in particular peaked my curiosity. There were hundreds of details arranged in no particular order on the floor. The interesting thing about these details was that most had an interesting juxtaposition. For instance on one table there were three spark plugs, a lock and key and a grenade. Then there was a box sitting in the corner that was full of bowling pins. It was a very random day.
These two photos paired together seem to me a good way to describe the day.

Since moving back to Louisville with my wife Danielle I no longer shoot photos daily for a newspaper. This has many benefits but some drawbacks. Each year most newspaper's have a Spring Fashion issue. For the past few I have worked in conjunction with a talented designer named Andrea who works for The Decatur Daily on their annual fashion issue.
There will be no collaboration this year but my wife did get this sweet new outfit so I thought photos of her in it were in order. One of her friends ran by as she was posing it up on public streets saying how jealous she was.

I headed to Lexington last weekend to help my friend Keith edit and photograph the 2009 Boys Sweet Sixteen at Rupp Arena. Other than getting the flu and being sick for about a week now things went alright.
The championship game was one of the best in recent history, so said the announcer. It included two overtime periods with Holmes High coming out victorious. I was secretly pulling for the Louisville team Central High.

On our trek back from Tampa my friend David and I stopped through the Smokey Mountains to make landscape photos. Using Neutral Density filters and polarizers we were able to make exposures longer than one minute even in mid-day sun.

Dad-O and I went to Cave Run Lake on Saturday in search of the elusive Muskellunge, the fish of 10,000 casts. All I caught was a sun-burned face but I have some frames of Lou reeling in a muskie. He was unsuccessful at "boating" the largest member of the Pike family but we had a good time and the weather was amazing

Fire destroyed Old Hickory Inn on Lydia Street Monday, Feb. 23, 2009. The blaze that started in the rear of the building took about 40 firefighters an hour to extinguish. Bar owner David Hoffmann said he did not have insurance and hoped he would be able to salvage the business he has ran for about 10 years.

In January 2009 Kentucky suffers its worst ice storm in 6 years. Widespread power outages and freezing temperatures created a recipe for disaster. President Obama declared Kentucky a disaster last Thursday and FEMA along with other governmental agencies are coming in to assess the damage. The images in this sideshow are some of my favorite from the past couple of weeks.

Sybol Close sits on a bed in her frigid home in Greenville. Without funding to bring her home up to electrical code she will be foreced to move.

On the running track of the fellowship center at First Baptist Church in Greenville, Ky., Sybol Close looks down to the nearly vacated shelter. The 43-year-old’s eyes are bloodshot and full of tears. When the shelter closes Monday she will have nowhere to take the eight energetic children in the next room. Living with Close are her nine year-old son, seven grandchildren under the age of 7, two adult daughters, a son-in-law and another relative. Sybol's thoughts revolve around these children she cares for while their mothers and fathers work in Madisonville. Despite her worries, they are carefree; oblivious to the fact that they have nowhere to go once the shelter closes.

When the matriarch enters the room they swarm, clinging to her and spouting tales of the day as fast as they can. An outsider would never know that the children recently contracted a food-related virus, and have been quarantined from the rest of the families at the shelter. But their virus is just one unrelated chapter in the family’s dilemma.

The family’s home on Trowbridge Street just four blocks from the shelter is like a cave. The slow trickle of water is the only sound resonating from the structure. Close has been without power since last Tuesday after a tree limb destroyed the fuse box and electric meter of the 1940’s home. It is not up to code, and until a new meter and breaker box is installed, the electric company won't hook power up to it. Now, Close "crosses her fingers" in hopes that God will take care of her again. The family survived the tornado that hit Hopkins County one year ago.
"It’s just kinda hard watchin' everything you have just go down the drain”, she said. “It’s scary."
